For businesses such as cement equipment suppliers, where heavy machinery requires a stable power supply, 3-phase balancing is crucial. Here is the step-by-step procedure on how to calculate three-phase balancing:

1. Calculate the total load in each phase viz. A, B and C. It could be measured either in kilo-watts (kW) or kilo-volt-amperes (kVA).

2. Total Load; Find the total load across the three phase:

Load Imbalance Computation Determine load imbalance for each phase by finding the variation between the load of each phase and the average load:

4.Load imbalance calculation; Find the load imbalance of each phase. This is done by subtracting the average load in the phase from the load in each phase:

Ideally, the imbalances should be close to zero. A balanced system means that each phase has approximately the same load. If the imbalances are significant, you may need to redistribute loads in order to achieve balance.

Example Calculation

Let’s say the loads in each phase are as follows:

·  PA=30kW
·  PB=45 kW
·  PC=25 kW

Step 1: calculate the total load:

Ptotal=30+45+25=100kW

Step 2: calculate average load

Pavg=100/3≈33.33kW

Step 3: calculate the load imbalance

Conclusion

Ideally, a well-balanced three-phase system should have a percent imbalance of less than 5-10% to function at its best. Higher imbalances may need to have a redistribution of loads among the phases or the installation of additional balancing equipment such as phase balancers or transformers.
