How To Calculate Three-Phase Electric Power

2024-08-28

What is electrical power

Electrical power is the amount of work done by an electric current in a unit of time. The unit time is usually measured in seconds (s), and the work done is referred to as electrical power. Electric power is denoted by the symbol “P” and is a physical quantity that describes how fast or slow an electric current can do work. The capacity of an electrical device is usually the size of its electrical power, indicating the ability of the device to do work per unit of time.

What is electrical power

To make it easier to understand, the current can be compared to water flow: if you drink a large bowl of water at a time, then the weight of the water you drink is equivalent to the electrical work you do; if it took 10 seconds to drink, the amount of water you drink per second is the electrical power.

Electric power formula

Through the above description and analogy of electric power, the formula for calculating electric power is also obvious: divide the total electric work by the time used, and the resulting value is the electric power of the power-using equipment:

P=W/t

where P denotes electrical power, W denotes electrical work, and t denotes time.
